I produce cartoons and media networks.

Doug TenNapel first wowed us with his creation of the Earthworm Jim videogame and TV show. We didn’t know then that he was also a completely awesome artist, storyteller, and filmmaker, but soon he joined Random! Cartoons as one our strongest shorts creators with “Solomon Fix” and “Squirly Town.”  Now Doug’s got a Kickstarter for a hardcover book of the best of his sketchbooks where you’ll see the great, the bad, and the ugly of his work. And, it’s not just drawings, but “a useful tool on how to create characters, worlds and story lines for anything from video games to graphic novels and television shows.” Try it out, you’ll love Doug TenNapel’s sketchbooks.

cartoonhangover: Too Cool! Noah Levinson & Mike Rosenthal! Noah and Mike came into Frederator/NY a few weeks ago through a mutual friend of mine and Noah’s to talk about cartoons, Cartoon Hangover, and Too Cool! Cartoons. I didn’t read his email closely enough so I skipped over the fact that it was that Mike Rosenthal! What a pleasure it was finally meeting Mike in person and getting to know Noah and his GIF obsessions.

Eileen Brennan McQueen is a long time FOF. Her animated short, Go Spy Go, was featured in the very first episode of Channel Frederator (along with Pendleton Ward’s student short), wrote and illustrated “Dirtball Pete” a book for our Bolder Book project at Random House, and wrote some killer episodes of Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! So, what? You think we wouldn’t support her Kickstarter shorts?

What does it take to be a good show runner? “You need to be a cult leader.”

August 27, 2012

Vince Gilligan: I said as a joke one time on a panel, they said “What does it take to be a good show runner?” and I blurted out, “You need to be a cult leader.”

And as soon as I said it —I was joking, I was trying to get a laugh out of the audience— as soon as I said it, it felt right.

That sounds like a weird thing to say… but instead of the cult being about you, the cult has to be about the show. You have to be the high priest, or priestess. But you have to —what’s the word?— inculcate, is that the right word?

KCRW’s The Business: Like indoctrinate?

Vince Gilligan: Indoctrinate. You have to get everyone enthusiastic. Everyone from your writers, your director of photography, to your cast, absolutely your cast, every department head, every member of the crew, all your producers. You have to get everyone pulling the rope in the same direction.

And in that sense you have to be something of a cult leader, or a cheerleader. Cheerleader’s probably a more palatable term than cult leader.

KCRW: Well, I don’t know, Breaking Bad is pretty dark.

Vince Gilligan: But you gotta everybody sayin’, ‘I’ll bleed for this show!’”

It was genuine pleasure spending the afternoon a couple of weeks ago with a new FOF, writer and artist Max Milligan. He shared his stories with us and maybe absorbed some of what it’s like at an animation production company. And, hopefully, he didn’t let his parents know exactly what it’s like to be an almost 11 year old at a place that’s making some adult cartoons.
