I like posters way too much. Thank goodness I’m too old or too lazy or too busy to use ‘The One And Only Gig Poster Kit’ from from DIY Print Shop.

Nostalgia, graphic design, and just plain weirdness.
Several years ago I helped my friend Matthew Glass share his enormous LP cover collection on a blog he called LP Cover Lover (the tumblr is right here). So it was great to see this interview with him about his collection at Dust & Grooves.
Matthew nails it exactly right when he talks about his sweet spot between nostalgia for the music, graphic design, and just plain weirdness in his collection. Anyone with an interest in any of the above will love his site.
Attention, design nerds.
One of favorite people at tumblr is Peter Vidani, who overlords one of the most important and interesting groups at the company. As you can read in the interview below, design at tumblr has a significantly different role than at most Silicon Valley tech companies. The disparity has a lot to do with the company’s roots in New York City (rather than engineering centric Northern California) and even more about the vision of founder/CEO David Karp.
Peter Vidani on the Evolution of the Tumblr Dashboard
Ministry of Design senior minister Peter Vidani lays hands on every aspect of Tumblr’s visual and usage aesthetic. Initially contracted to work on theme creation, he came aboard full-time in 2009 and has steadily advanced his design philosophy of utility and simplicity. One of his primary, perpetual obsessions could be considered the real face of Tumblr: the Dashboard.

Thanks to Lauren Stillwell for the tip on this trailer.
Every once in a while I go over to SVA in New York to talk to the Master’s program co-chaired by Steven Heller & Lita Talarico. Not only was today’s class a great group, designer Francesco Izzo surprised me with this cool poster.
Thanks Francesco, Lita, and Steve, for a great day.

My Imprint Roundup.
I started reading Steve Heller’s piece on the amazing poster archive of Yiddish theatre placards at the New York Public Library Digital Archive (which I’d never heard about), and about the only thing I could figure to complain about was that they’re not on tumblr.
But, because I really like graphic design, and I’ve been too busy lately to catch up with my favorite sites, The Daily Heller led me to browse a little bit on its home site. Imprint is a blog from Print Magazine where dozens of smart writers and artists share their interests of the moment and it’s the place I like to peruse when my brain opens up enough to let the great in.
If you’re a careful reader of my blog you’ll recall Steve’s name, but their index will also lead you to animation community stalwarts like JJ Sedelmaier or John Canemaker writing about animation, sure, but also the wider aperture of their interests.
My own perusing today led me to a couple of other cool posts. Ellen Shapiro had a piece on a free show in New York about the great Life Magazine photographers. And my collection of posters from Hatch Show Print in Nashville has my radar up, so Gail Anderson (a wonderful designer) writing about Greenwich Letterpress caught my attention too.
Check out Imprint if you have a little time, you’ll have some fun.
